How to Minimize The Risk of Dog Loss

Nov 29, 2023: Episode 161

A dog went missing while under the care of a pet sitter. Gratefully, this pup was reunited with his family after being missing for nearly a week. Just days later, a ferret went missing while being watched by a family friend, and is still missing. We understand that accidents happen & we aren't here to shame anyone. However, these incidents need to be evaluated & discussed in order to minimize the risk of being repeated.

When interviewing pet care providers, you could ask some questions. What techniques do they use to ensure that the animals don't get loose? Have they ever lost a pet in the past? If so, how did they respond? Were they able to safely recover the animal? What are their emergency plan procedures? Are dogs secured in their vehicle? Dogs sometimes escape during car accidents.

Earlier this year, I slipped on black ice & fell, while walking a client's sweet pup. She came to check on me & licked my face while I was on the ground. The fall resulted in two broken bones, but I maintained control of the leash & the dog's safety.

We are consistently thankful for our community, Missing Pet Recovery & Lost and Found Pets in Deschutes County for tirelessly helping to find these lost pets & reunite them with their families.
