Help Our Street Cat Community!

Oct 7, 2023: Episode 138

Here's a way to assist our street cats. I would add rocks or other weighted objects for stability, and tape down the lid. This is a low cost, low energy project which could help our animal community. Plus, you can build it with your children, while educating them about the animals' needs, discussing the various weather challenges, etc. The kiddos will enjoy knowing that they're instrumental in the keeping our animals safe. I'd like to see many of these around town, just like the free libraries. Let's do this! Please comment once you've made yours, to encourage others. Show us photos if you'd like. We're making ours today!

Remember to use straw instead of blankets or hay, and to keep the entry hole away from the ground to avoid flooding. Other people have used hairdryers to soften the plastic before cutting. Typically, the bins can be located at thrift shops.

DIY (Winter) Stray Shelter ! What you’ll need: •Plastic Tote (size can vary based on the number of kitties you are caring for) •Styrofoam Cooler •Straw (NOT hay and NOT Blankets!) •Exacto Knife How to make: 1) Start by cutting a 5-1/2 to 6" diameter hole in the tote to act as an entrance or exit. *use your noggin and don’t cut yourself! 2) Insert your StyroFoam cooler into the tote and cut a hole to match the hole in the tote. 3) Add straw in and around the Styrofoam cooler for added insulation, using as much as possible. 4) Add your Styrofoam lid for added insulation. 5) Complete by adding your lid back onto the tote. 6) Cut a piece of plastic to cover the open in the tote to further protect your kitties from the outside elements (not shown in video). 7) Use a paper plate or bowl and some yummy food to entice your kitties to enter. 8)Place in a protected area but make sure the cats have easy access to entwr and leave in case of predators. BIG SOP Thank you to all those caring for stray or feral cat communities!
