Keith's parents met in the Navy, & he was born in a Naval hospital. Nakala's father is a Vietnam Veteran. Her father and all 6 uncles served in the Navy.

Nakala spent 6 years as an Army Medic while working & attending school. She competed to earn the title "Soldier of the Year", battalion level. Nakala taught courses on updated medical procedure, & was honorably discharged.
